5 Herbs for Soothing a Sore Throat

There’s nothing worse than feeling that sore throat come on. Whether it is due to a cold causing you to sleep with your mouth open all night, dry throat from speaking at an event, or just that scratchy feeling in the back of your throat you can’t kick, herbal teas are the way to go!

There are a lot of herbs that are great for healing mucous membranes and relieving the sore, scratchy feeling that you just can’t ignore. Let’s talk about a few of my favorites.

  1. Marshmallow root – This wonderful herb is great for soothing and protecting mucous membranes in the throat, stomach, intestines and urinary tract. “Mallows” are said to cure just about any affliction. Along with soothing a sore throat, marshmallow root is widely recommended for inflammation of the bowels and bladder, a great addition when experiencing a urinary tract infection.
  2. Licorice Root – This very sweet aromatic root is a great additive to herbal blends to help sweeten bitter flavors without interfering with the medicinal properties. It is often used as a tonic for colds, coughs and sore throats and is a known cough suppressant. Licorice should be used with caution especially in pregnancy or when nursing.
  3. Calendula – Traditionally used to help reduce inflammation in the mouth, throat and tonsils, Calendula is helpful for soothing and rejuvenating skin, treating burns and mucous membranes. It has a very mild aroma and taste that can also be added to broths and soups. Calendula is safe for the whole family, including pregnant and nursing mamas and young children.
  4. Lemongrass– Lemongrass naturally helps the body reduce fever, respiratory distress and sore throats. It has a mild citrusy flavor and is used widely for its medicinal properties. Lemongrass also works as a mild sedative, which makes it a great addition before bedtime when suffering from coughs and sore throats.
  5. Yarrow flower – A wonderful immune booster that all families should have in their cabinet, Yarrow will soothe and heal all mucous membranes. This herb is great for the glandular system and combats colds and flus quickly. Yarrow has a bitter flavor, but when added to other more aromatic herbs, can be easily hidden.
